First, your Week 3 recap.
The Giants went into their matchup with the Panthers with many of their key offensive players lost to injuries. I did not expect the Giants to win this game…. Well, Eli Manning was Eli Manning throwing for 288 yards and one touchdown. Rameses Barden, starting in place for the injured Hakeem Nicks, caught 9 passes for 138 yards.
Hmmm…. Maybe the Giants are starting to get into their grove, while the Panthers are overrated…
Sunday’s games saw the Bears take care of business against the Rams, the Jaguars beat the Colts, and three games go to overtime. But first, the Cowboys defeat the Buccaneers.
Offensively, this was a snooze fest, but the Cowboys defense came up when it mattered most. Dallas better solve their problems when it comes to false starts on the offensive side of the ball. Up next is Chicago on Monday night and there’s no telling which Bears team will show up to Cowboys Stadium. Will it be the one that defeated the Rams or the one that imploded against the Packers?
The 49ers were upset by the Vikings in Minnesota. Maybe the 49ers are not as good as people are making them out to be. The Bills defeated the Browns (no surprise) but lost their running back C.J. Spiller to a shoulder injury. He is expected to miss one game.
The Bengals beat the Redskins 38-31 with this first play from scrimmage:
The game had its share of controversy. The Redskins offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, was seen arguing with the officials and following them to their locker room. His actions cost him $25,000.
Maybe he can ask his dad, the Redskins coach, for the money.
Now the three overtime games. The Jets defeated the Dolphins in the extra session, but it came with a cost. Cornerback Darrelle Revis tore his ACL and is lost for the rest of the season. The Jets now have a massive hole in their secondary for the rest of the season. The Chiefs, behind the 233 yards by running back Jamaal Charles, rallied from 18-points down to defeat the Saints 27-24 in overtime. Charles had a 91-yard touchdown run that started the comeback. Kicker Ryan Succop set a franchise record for most field goals made in a game with six.
Perhaps the Saints aren’t as good as we thought…
Perhaps the Saints aren’t as good as we thought…
And now the most exciting game of the day… Lions at Titans.
First, this punt return for TD by the Titans…
Lions rallied to take 27-20 lead in the 4thquarter. Then the Titans scored a touchdown on a kickoff return to tie the game at 27.
Nate Washington had this catch to give the Titans a 34-27 lead.
Then this fumble and scoop and score made it 41-27. The Lions would score a touchdown and then recover the onside kick to set up this last play:
In overtime, the Titans scored a field goal on the opening drive of overtime. With their overtime possession, the Lions drove down to inside the Titans 10. Facing a fourth down, Detroit went for it and Tennessee stopped them to win 44-41. What a way for Titans quarterback Jake Locker to get his first NFL win.
The afternoon games featured the Cardinals dominating the Eagles at home, and the Falcons showing no letdown with a victory over the Chargers. The Raiders rallied to defeat their historic rival, the Steelers, for Coach Dennis Allen’s first NFL win.
The Texans continued their Bulls on Parade theme with a win in Denver over the quarterback that regularly victimized them when he was with the Colts. Well, so far my AFC Super Bowl pick is looking well.
Sunday Night featured its fair share of drama in a back-and-forth contest between AFC powers. Before the game, Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith learned that his brother was killed in a motorcycle accident in Virginia late Saturday night. Smith went home to be with his family and then played the game of his career catching 6 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
The game had its share of low moments. A fan got onto the field before halftime.
If only Mike Curtis was around…
Towards the end of the game, the replacement referees penalized Coach John Harbaugh for trying to get their attention in calling a timeout. The Baltimore fans let their displeasure be known.
Al Michaels: “That’s the loudest manure chant I’ve ever heard.”
The game came down to a field goal. In last season’s AFC Championship Game between these two teams in New England, this happened:
Last Sunday, this happened:
And in the post-game chaos, Coach Bill Belichick is seen chasing and grabbing an official. The NFL would fine him $50,000 for his actions.
Monday Night…
The Green Bay Packers faced a tough Seattle team. The Packers left the Pacific Northwest with a 12-7 victory. M.D. Jennings made the game saving interception to push Green Bay’s record to 2-1.
We’ve all seen this play. While I agree that it was an interception, the Packers put themselves in this position. They settled for a field goal inside the Seahawks 15 in the third quarter. They did not convert a two-point conversion after they scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter. If Green Bay had gotten a first down on their last offensive drive of the game, the game would be over.
Oh, and it is worth mentioning that Green Bay’s offensive ranks are equal to Cleveland. Again, Green Bay’s offensive ineptness is equal to the Browns.
Oh… and this will make Packers fans happy.
The NFL supervisor in the replay booth was Phil Luckett. The same Phil Luckett that was involved in “Coingate” in the 1998 Thanksgiving game between the Steelers and Lions. The same Phil Luckett whose officiating crew that ruled that quarterback Vinny Testaverde scored a touchdown when clearly he was short of goal line in a Jets 32-31 win over the Seahawks 11 days after “Coingate.”
With this recent disaster with the replacement referees, the NFL and the regular referees have resumed labor talks. They have progressed to the point that an agreement has been reached between the parties. The regular referees will return to the field starting with tonight's game between the Browns and Ravens.
As for my picks… Thank goodness I didn’t put any money on these games of I’d probably be wearing Cement Shoes at the bottom of the Trinity River.
5-11 last week… Ugh. Well, I have a Top 10 pick going into next year’s NFL Draft.
Yeah, Monicadefeated me this week with a 9-7 record. My goal is just to get back to above .500 for the week. Small goals.
Week 4 is the start of the bye weeks. The Colts and Steelers are the first teams to get a week off. Adjust your fantasy rosters accordingly.
Looking at the games for Week 4, the Ravens host the Browns in an AFC North showdown. Sunday has the Texans go for another first in the team’s short history: a 4-0 start. It will come against a Titans team that put up 44 against the Lions. San Diego travels to Kansas City while the Broncos host the Raiders in the other AFC West showdown game. The Patriots look to get back to .500 against the Bills.
The Jets begin the rest of their season without Darelle Revis by playing the 49ers. Detroit has their first home game since Week 1 by hosting the Vikings. The two undefeated teams in the NFC look to continue their winning ways with the Falcons hosting the Panthers and the Cardinals hosting the Dolphins.
The game that everyone had circled on their calendars at the start of the season is the Saints at Packers. Clearly both teams have not lived up to expectations. The winner of this game has a great chance of saving their season while the loser will likely see their playoff chances diminish.
Sunday Night is an NFC East showdown in Philadelphia between the Giants and Eagles. Should be another good one.
And Monday Night is between two teams with a long history in the NFL: the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys.
Here are your picks for Week 4. Let’s hope these are better than last week’s. If not… good-bye thumbs.

2012 NFL SEASON: WEEK 3
Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
One-eighth of the 2012 NFL Season is complete. And so far, well, I think Jim Mora can sum it up best:
The record:
WEEK 2: 7-9
TOTAL: 18-14
As shown below, Monica Roberts had a better week than me. She finished at .500, but she beat me fair and square for the week. She’s bummed out about her performance as I am about mine, but 8-8 was good enough for the Broncos to make the playoffs last season.
Gotta do better next time. There are only 224 games remaining across 15 weeks.
BREAKDOWN OF RECORD
MONICA | NOON | 3PM | NIGHT | HOME | AWAY | TV | ≤ 8 PTS | OT
WK 2 | 8-8 | 3-6 | 2-2 | 2-1 | 6-1 | 1-8 | 3-3 | 3-6 | 0-0 |
TOTAL | 18-14 | 11-7 | 2-5 | 5-2 | 13-4 | 5-10 | 7-6 | 7-11 | 1-0 |
That pretty much sums up the NFL through the 12.5% mark: “You think you know, but you don’t know.”
This week proves that as I started the weekend with the Packers beating their division rivals at home. Green Bay’s defense sacked Jay Cutler 7 times, with linebacker Clay Matthews leading the game with 3.5 sacks. The Packers forced Culter to toss 4 interceptions. NFL Network cameras caught the Bears quarterback yelling at his offensive line.
The turning point of the game was this surprise fake field goal towards the end of the first half. Green Bay never saw their double digit lead threatened for the rest of the game as Chicago’s offense was unable to produce any sustaining drives.
I ended up following Sunday’s games on my phone. I was in Dallas for the annual LGBT Pride parade and helping register voters. It was raining, but it was better than in previous years where it was 100 degrees and hot. Still good times.
Here is what I saw during the highlight shows.
I checked my phone for the scores and this made me jump: Arizona 20, New England 18.
That’s right: Arizona 20, New England 18
Eli Manning… wow. I have him as my fantasy quarterback and that game sums up what you have with him on your roster. He will either give you a bad game (3 interceptions, one returned for a touchdown) or a really good one (243 yards, 2 touchdowns… in the FOURTH QUARTER!)
Eli Manning threw for 510 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in the Giants 41-34 victory over the Buccaneers.
Though that wasn’t the story to emerge from the game:
Yeah, you are supposed to play to the whistle and until the clock says all zeroes, but there is gamesmanship. Besides, the Buccaneers let the Giants score to take the lead so that they could get the ball back with some time left.
Expect teams to do this to Tampa the rest of the season.
The Bills was horrible against the Jets in Week 1. In Week 2, they had their home opener against the Chiefs and looked much better. CJ Spiller had 170 total yards and 2 rushing touchdowns to pull Buffalo’s record even at 1-1.
The Saints are a mess.
Back-to-back weeks of giving up 35 points on defense, allowing 186 rushing yards/game, and allowing 4 total rushing touchdowns. Drew Brees has already thrown for 4 interceptions. Last season, Brees threw for 14 interceptions setting the single-season record for passing touchdowns. It is wrong to assume that Brees will throw 32 interceptions over a 16-game regular season. However this highlights how much the Saints miss their head coach Sean Payton as he serves his year-long suspension for his involvement in the Saints bounty scandal.
As expected the Bengals rebounded against the Browns and the Eagles and Ravens battled in a rather entertaining game. Philadelphia in back-to-back weeks was involved in one-point games and quarterback Michael Vick has thrown for 6 interceptions… The Eagles are 2-0 and in first place in the NFC East.
Andrew Luck got his first win as the starting quarterback of Colts. So did Miami’s Ryan Tannehill, mainly with the help of Reggie Bush and the Raiders overall ineptitude.
My AFC pick for the Super Bowl, Houston, is off to a 2-0 start. Houston racked up 216 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground. Arian Foster led all rushers with 110 yards and a TD, while Ben Tate picked up 74 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jacksonville set a franchise low for time of possession (16:43) and total yards (117).
In fact, a fan who ran on the field during the gameoutgained the entire Jaguars team before getting escorted out of the stadium by security personnel.
And now the Cowboys game…
Best to get it out of the way.
Ugh. Ugh. And… more ugh.
I am glad I was doing something productive in registering voters at Dallas Pride and not watching that travesty.
I am glad I was doing something productive in registering voters at Dallas Pride and not watching that travesty.
Generally, I think Cowboys fans expected them to be 1-1 at this point in the season. Just in a different manner. Running back Marshawn Lynch went into Beast Mode which allowed rookie quarterback Russell Wilson to manage the game and get his first win in the NFL.
I think the blocked punt was a turning point and it set the tone for the game.
Cowboys and special team problems in Seattle… that hasn’t happened before…
Seattle is one of the loudest places in the NFL and the Cowboys just couldn’t take the crowd out of it. The rout was on from then on.
And the dropped passes. Witten, of all players, had 5 drops.
Simply put, this was a dud of a game. Try to win next week.
The other late afternoon games featured the Redskins against the Rams. Washington had a chance to send the game to overtime, but Redskins Josh Morgan incurred a misconduct penalty that pushed his team out of makeable field goal range.
The Steelers were without Troy Polamalu, but beat the Jets. New York is now 1-10 all-time in Pittsburgh, including going 0-2 in the playoffs. Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed 24 passes to 10 different receivers against a Jets secondary that was without cornerback Darrelle Revis. All that talk about new offensive coordinator Todd Haley impacting Roethlisberger’s play seem to be moot now.
Yeah, the Jets beat the Bills in Week 1, but I still don’t think they will make the playoffs. There is way too much drama surrounding that team.
Even though the Chargers beat the Titans, it was an emotional day in San Diego with the retiring of lineback Junior Seau’s number. Seau tragically took his own life during the offseason. He was one of the best linebackers of my generation.
On Sunday Night, the 49ers won with another eight point victory but again the final score does not tell the whole story. I am pretty impressed with San Francisco’s offense with the running of Frank Gore, tight end Vernon Davis, and receiver Mario Manningham. And again, that defense.
Even though Green Bay is my NFC pick for the Super Bowl… nah it’s way too early to make adjustments to my early season prediction. Wait until Week 9 or 10.
Even though Green Bay is my NFC pick for the Super Bowl… nah it’s way too early to make adjustments to my early season prediction. Wait until Week 9 or 10.
Monday Night featured the first quarterback duel between Peyton Manning and Matt Ryan. Honestly, Atlanta should have blown Denver out of the water. In the first half, the Falcons turned 4 Broncos turnovers into 13 points. Credit Denver’s defense for not letting two field goal drives turn into touchdowns.
In the fourth quarter, Peyton Manning led two scoring drives to close the gap to 6 with 3 minutes remaining. It was up to the Denver defense to hold one more time. Julio Jones caught a key pass over the middle on third down and Michael Turner had a huge gain on the next play that essentially ended the game for a 27-21 victory over the Broncos.
And how did Michael Turner celebrate his team’s victory?
The Falcons running back was pulled over at 5 AM on Tuesday morning for speeding and failed a field sobriety test. He was charged with DUI and speeding. Right now it is unknown if the Falcons will discipline him, but expect the NFL to come down on him.
As I look at the matchups for Week 3, there are some compelling matchups. Thursday night starts the week off with the Panthers hosting the Giants. This could be the coming out game for Cam Newton as this is his first primetime game as a starting NFL quarterback and the first for Carolina since 2010.
On Sunday, Dallas will see the Cowboys home opener against Tampa Bay. The Rams, led by Coach Jeff Fisher, visit a beleaguered Chicago team. Buffalo travels down to Cleveland as the Browns play their third consecutive game in the Buckeye State. San Francisco has contained Aaron Rodgers, Calvin Johnson… how will they do against Adrian Peterson in Minneapolis? The Jets travel to Miami and the Redskins take on the Bengals.
The late games have the Texans traveling to Denver for their first true test of the regular season. Houston has beaten Miami and Jacksonville, and now we’ll see how they do against a team that has a QB that can complete a forward pass to a receiver. Pittsburgh-Oakland is one for those that know the history of the NFL. Oh, and it’s the 40th Anniversary of the Immaculate Reception.
There are two late Sunday games that feature undefeated teams: Eagles at Cardinals and Falcons at Chargers.
Here is one guarantee pick for those games: I like the team that is 2-0. If they score more points than the other team, then they will be 3-0.
Sunday night is a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game. This time it is in Baltimore. Both the Patriots and Ravens will be looking to avenge losses in Week 2. Could this be a changing of the guard in the AFC or a maintaining of the status quo?
Monday, Green Bay travels to Seattle. Now the last time Green Bay played was on Thursday in Week 2. Dallas had 11 days off in between games before playing Seattle and look what happened… Will the same happen to Green Bay after having 11 days off between games?
Again, the theme of this entry was: “You think you know, but you don’t know.”

2012 NFL SEASON: WEEK 2
Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
The reason why these picks are showing up on Thursday instead of Sunday is because the NFL decided to air games on Thursday Nights from September into December. It does make picking games and setting fantasy rosters very interesting.
WEEK 1: 11-5
TOTAL: 11-5
BREAKDOWN OF RECORD
MONICA | NOON | 3PM | NIGHT | HOME | AWAY | TV | ≤ 8 PTS | OT
WK 1 | 10-6 | 8-1 | 0-3 | 3-1 | 7-3 | 4-2 | 4-3 | 4-5 | 1-0 |
TOTAL | 10-6 | 8-1 | 0-3 | 3-1 | 7-3 | 4-2 | 4-3 | 4-5 | 1-0 |
For starters, I was SHOCKED that the Cowboys won their opener. I wasn’t the only one. Many prominent Dallas media members did not expect the Cowboys to win this game. Yeah, I was watching former President Bill Clinton’s keynote to the DNC, but I had the computer on the game.
Right now it appears that Dallas found their running game in DeMarco Murray whose 48-yard run in the third quarter kept a drive alive and set up a field goal to extend Dallas’ lead to 7 going into the fourth. Kevin Ogletree has emerged as the team’s third receiver catching 8 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. His big play was a 13-yard reception with 2:11 remaining that allowed the Cowboys to run out the clock and escape New York with a 24-17 victory.
And that secondary is vastly improved with Brandon Carr who was acquired via free agency and first round draft pick Morris Claiborne. In the two matchups last season, Eli Manning torched the Dallas secondary throwing for 746 yards and 5 touchdowns vs. 1 interception. In this recent game, Manning threw for 213 yards and a touchdown. After quarterback Tony Romo threw an interception that set the Giants up with goal-to-go in the first quarter, the defense held New York to a field goal.
It’s only the first game though. A lot can happen between now and December.
Both the Cowboys and Giants have 11 days off in between games. Will there be some rust when they play this coming Sunday? Perhaps. While the Giants first two games are at home, the Cowboys had to travel to New York for the NFL’s opener and then to Seattle for their Week 2 matchup.
One of the many stories about Week 1 was the record number of five rookie quarterbacks starting under center. Most did what you expected.
Andrew Luck of the Colts had to start against the Bears, which as expected he struggled. If there is some positive to come out of this, his stat line was similar to that of Peyton Manning’s first NFL start in 1998.
Ryan Tannehill, who played at Texas A&M in college, played his first NFL game in Houston as the starting quarterback of the Dolphins. Andrew Weeden was ugly in his Browns’ debut throwing for 118 yards and 4 interceptions, one of which clinched the game for the Eagles. Then again… it’s the Browns.
Robert Griffin III lead the Redskins to a 40-32 upset win on the road over the Saints and made many happy fantasy owners look like geniuses with his 320 yard, 2 touchdown performance.
However, I was impressed with Russell Wilson’s performance in Seattle’s loss at Arizona driving them down the field (and some help from the replacement refs) for what would have been the game winning score.
With all the mania surrounding Tim Tebow, the Jets destroyed the Bills. Houston, as expected, defeated Miami. Some people might point out that the Rams might not be the NFC’s doormat, but I was surprised at the Lions performance. Detroit’s quarterback Matthew Stafford threw 3 interceptions, but redeemed himself by driving Detroit for the game winning touchdown pass with less than 20 seconds remaining.
The 49ers did something they hadn’t done since the days of Joe Montana: win a game at Lambeau Field. San Francisco kicker David Akers is the fourth NFL kicker to make a 63 yard field goal.
It appears that the Packers haven’t shaken off that playoff loss to the Giants, but the Falcons did with their 40-point performance in Kansas City.
On Sunday Night, Peyton Manning made his regular season debut as a member of the Denver Broncos. Monica and I were 8-5 heading into the Sunday Night game and I needed this game to win this week and take the overall lead.
Peyton Manning was spectacular in his debut performance against the Steelers throwing for 253 yards and 2 touchdowns. Can you believe that the last time this guy played was January 2011?
Denver’s defense sealed the game with an interception from Tracy Porter that was returned 43-yards for a touchdown.
Wow… that sounds familiar…
In the Monday Night games, Baltimore showed that they won’t only be known for their defense in 2012, but their offense. Joe Flaaco and Ray Rice demolished the Cincinnati Bengals in their home opener for 430 offensive yards.
The capper, in usual Ravens fashion, was a pick-six by safety Ed Reed. Reed is now the NFL’s all-time leader in interception return yards with 1,497 and tied for 10th in interceptions with 58 in his career. Seven have been returned for touchdowns. This was his 10thinterception against the Bengals tying the mark he has set picking off Cleveland quarterbacks.
I was impressed by San Diego’s defense in the late Monday Night game keeping the Raiders out of the end zone for 59:04.
Maybe San Diego will keep up in the AFC West. Besides, the Chargers were successful against Peyton Manning when he was quarterback of the Colts having derailed their attempt at perfection in 2005, a rare x-interception performance in their 2007 regular season matchup, and defeating the Colts in consecutive playoff games.
But here is one factor that could derail the Chargers: Norv Turner.
What will Week 2 bring? The NFL’s oldest rivalry continues with a Thursday Night showdown between the Bears and Packers. The early games feature a showdown between the Ravens and Eagles in Philadelphia, Andrew Luck has his first home start for the Colts against the Vikings, Houston goes on the road to Jacksonville, and the Giants look to rebound against Tampa. In the afternoon games, the Cowboys play in Seattle and the Steelers and Jets face off for the first time since the 2010 AFC Championship Game.
Sunday night has the Lions traveling to San Francisco. This game is not known for the 49ers win in Detroit last year, but what took place during after the game.
Monday night is the Falcons hosting the Broncos for the first matchup between Matt Ryan and Peyton Manning. I expect this to be an offensive shootout in the Georgia Dome.
Anyways, the picks for Week 2…
